Core strengthening exercises target the group of muscles commonly referred to as the core muscle group. The core group includes the transversus abdominis, the obliques, the pelvic floor muscles, the diaphragm, the gluteus maximus, trapezius, erector spine, rectum, abdominals, multifidus, and the longissimus thoracic. These muscles comprise the body's abdominal area from the shoulders down the back and abdomen, to the legs. Strengthening these muscles provides added support to the spinal column and imparts several physical benefits which can be enjoyed in almost every activity of daily life.
Our core muscle group is at the center of every movement the human body makes – even those you would not expect to be linked to the core muscles such as reaching your arms and kicking your legs. These motions begin with muscles included in the core abdominal muscles. The benefits of core strengthening, when used in tandem with chiropractic care, are numerous.
Increased Strength - Though it seems obvious that participating in strengthening exercises would make you stronger, you will notice your increased strength when you do not expect it. Not only will you experience increased strength, but specifically strengthening the core will make you stronger for everyday activities, motions, and movements. From daily movements like walking, twisting your neck, and bending, to more physically oriented movements such as swimming and running, you will notice all of these movements and activities come more easily with a stronger core.
Increased Stability - Balance begins at your center. In yoga and Pilates, practitioners are advised to tighten their abdominal muscles when they feel unstable because tightening these muscles will help your body maintain balance. The stronger the core muscles grow, the better you will be able to maintain balance whether doing yoga, Pilates, or walking across an icy parking lot.
Reduced Risk of Injury - Although the core muscles are activated during almost every movement we make, they often are not strong enough to truly support the rest of the body. When these muscles are too weak, other parts of the body become injured or stressed when compensating. With increased balance and strength, you reduce the risk of injury in accidents such as slipping and falling or injuries incurred during athletic activities. In addition, strengthening the core muscles reduces the risk of spraining or straining soft tissues in your back. For example, you will be stronger to bend over and pick up objects and to step in and out of a vehicle.
Well-Preserved Chiropractic Adjustments - The core muscles directly support the spine. With a stronger core, your spine will be able to maintain proper alignment for a longer period of time between adjustments, becoming less likely to subluxate due to physical activity or other stresses.
